A Teaching Assistant (TA) assists in the instruction of any upper or lower division course at the University under the supervision of a faculty member. The TA primarily assists the faculty member in charge of the course by conducting discussion or laboratory sections that supplement faculty lectures and by grading assignments and examinations.
Graduate students may also be appointed up to 50 percent time (twenty hours/week) as Readers and Tutors. A Tutor provides tutoring to individual (one-on-one) or small groups (three or more) of undergraduate or graduate students who require additional help to understand a course or topical material. In some instances tutoring may focus on improved use of the English language. A Reader, on the other hand, assists a course instructor by grading homework, papers, or exams and may also hold office hours to answer students' questions about such assignments.
All appointees must be in good academic standing, i.e., maintain a GPA of 3.0 in upper-division and graduate course work and must not have more than a total of eight units of F and/or U grades overall.
Graduate students appointed as teaching assistants, associates, readers or tutors (ASE’S) are represented by the Association of Student Employees/UAW under a collective bargaining agreement with the University of California. All salary payments under these titles are subject to a deduction for union membership dues or agency fee deduction for students who choose not to become members of the union. Tenure-track faculty positions for Chemical Engineers
The Department of NanoEngineering (http://ne.ucsd.edu), which combines materials and chemical engineering applied to nanotechnologies in the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, invites applications for multiple tenure-track Assistant Professor positions. The NanoEngineering Department is committed to building an excellent, diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body (http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/diversity).
Candidates must have earned their Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering to support the Chemical Engineering Program within the department. New faculty will be expected to build and maintain a strong independent research program in the area of chemical engineering and advanced materials. Of particular interest are advanced nanobiotechnology, bio-inspired nanomaterials and nanomedicine with potential applications to healthcare and bioengineering applications. The career development of the new hire, based on the research interest, may have the opportunity to participate in various school-wide and university-wide initiatives and centers, including the Institute of Engineering in Medicine, Moores Cancer Center, Center for Nanomedicine and Engineering, Center for Wearable Sensors and Robotics, Institute for Materials in Energy Technologies Initiative, Center for Energy Research, Sustainable Power and Energy Center, etc.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Chemical Engineering. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching of Chemical Engineering undergraduate laboratory courses and other core classes, improvement of curriculum, helping coordination of ABET accreditation activities, development and assessment of new educational initiatives, and serving as the faculty advisor to student organizations.
In addition to research, teaching, and general professional and public service, service contributions that promote diversity and equal opportunity are encouraged and given recognition in the evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications.
